In some ways yes, in others no.
Better:
- higher resolution
- broader colour gamut (range)
- superior audio formats
- advanced special features
Inferior (??)
- more expensive (disks are typically $5-$20 more expensive than the same movie on DVD)
- requires 1080p HDTV and good surround system for full benefit
- can’t be played on DVD players (i.e. limits ability to play disks in portable, car, kitchen, kid’s room, cottage DVD players)
- can’t (easily) backup disks
- limited range of movies available (yet).
- hardware still immature and expensive ($350+)
Bottom line:
For those who are willing to pay extra (vs DVD) and have the equipment necessary to allow the benefits to be realized Blu-ray is a good choice. BUT many people will get limited benefit relative to upconverted DVDs.
